When you shift into 4-wheel drive, you want your truck or SUV’s transfer case to make that happen smoothly every time. Whether you’re blasting through a foot of snow, crawling your way out of a muddy work site, or deep in the back country, there’s nothing like shifting into 4-wheel drive and going where no four wheeled vehicle was meant to go! But with all the torque and stress involved, you may find yourself with a broken gear, chain, or some other transfer case component. That’s when you need to contact Zumbrota Bearing and Gear to get running again on and off-road.

Have you ever wondered just how the power from the engine and transmission gets shifted from two-wheel to four-wheel drive? Releasing power to the front and rear wheels takes place behind the transmission on its way to the rear wheels at the transfer case. The following diagram shows what happens when you shift from two to four-wheel drive.

Simple Transfer Case Diagram

The red arrow shows the normal flow of power from the transmission to the rear wheels through the driveshaft. However, when you shift into four-wheel drive, that power has to be split with the front wheels. That happens in the transfer case.

When you shift into four-wheel drive, gears are engaged to power a chain drive that runs from a gear driving the rear driveshaft to power another set of gears behind the front driveshaft. Once engaged, this driveshaft delivers power to the front differential and out to the front wheels. The green arrow shows how the flow of power is split at the transfer case to power the front wheels to give you the traction you need.

Of course this is a simplification of what actually happens when shifting to four-wheel drive. It requires a number of gears, bearings and splines to work under exacting standards and perfect synchronization to make the transition smooth and dependable.

Because there is considerable torque and strain put on the internal workings of a transfer case, it is important for every part to be properly aligned and built to exacting standards for strength, durability and fit. When you require a rebuilt or new transfer case, you can depend on Zumbrota Bearing and Gear to deliver.
