Mark Twain once said, “The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” The same could be said for the manual transmission. Here at Zumbrota Bearing and Gear, we agree with Mark Twain. Rumors of the death of the manual transmission have been greatly exaggerated.
The auto industry is turning the notion of the manual transmission being dead on its head. One example will be the newest version of the Focus RS, available in either 2016 or 2017. This RS version of Ford’s venerable fuel sipping compact will come equipped with all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission, transforming what was just another econo-box into a sporty fun machine. An automatic transmission won’t even be available as an option.
Why the renewed interest in the manual transmission? In a recent Autocar article, Ford’s vice president of global product development, Raj Nair, commented that future RS models will use a manual gearbox: “All our current research says that customers really like these kinds of cars to have a manual gearbox."
Driving enthusiasts are saying they want the control, greater interaction with the driving experience, and just plain fun of driving, and auto makers are listening. General Motors makes a six-speed manual transmission available for its Chevrolet SS models and the Buick Regal GS. Even the traditionally sedate Cadillac, known for luxury, offers its thundering 556 hp CTS-V speed machine with a six-speed manual transmission.
These are strong indications that drivers who love the feel and fun of running through the gears of a manual transmission need not worry about the object of their affection disappearing any time soon.
